the latest victim, just 11 years old. a d.c. nightclub is shut down after an early morning shooting. and trouble in daytona 500. we hear from a fan so close to the wreckage, he took home a piece of debris. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rose senfield. the crash comes before the biggest day of the event, the daytona 500. no fans were killed in the wreck but more than 30 were injured and one racing fan from maryland got an up-close look at all of them. darcy spoke to him. darcy? >> he says this was the first time though it won't be his last. he'll be back there tomorrow for the daytona 500. these photos were taken following a crinternational spe. he was about 50 yards away from

where a car flew into the fence and sent debris everywhere. >> i smelled smoke, tires, next something pop out of the fence and it was one of those deals where you touched your head. >> the crash injured at least 33 nascar fans watching the nationwide series race. a tire and large pieces of the damaged car made it through or over a fence that's there to protect spectators. nascar officials say despite the damage, the daytona 500 will go on. >> we transported 14 people off the property and treated 14 people at or on-track care facility. >> it was a chain reaction crash that ended with driver kyle larson's car going airborne, smashing into the fence. the burning engine lied there. fans ran to get away from the out of control car gli don't know where kyle came from in relation to all of us but an heck of an ending to a good

race. >> he says it won't stop him from going to the daytona 500 tomorrow. >> if you go to a hockey game, hockey pucks fly up there. if you go to a baseball game, that's even more dangerous. the baseball can come right over the dugout and there's nothing to protect you there. >> nascar officials plan to make repai repa repairs to the fence. he says he's not worried about going to the race. he'll sit up higher in the stands and did manage to grab a piece of fiberglass and he's keeping that. >> wild day. darcy, thank you. a young girl injured in a fire that killed her father and two sisters has now died from her injury. 11-year-old daijah price had been in critical condition since flames ripped through her home thursday morning. her mother and one of her sisters escaped serious injury.

the family is trying to cope with the tremendous loss. >> to hear darrell's voice or talk with him or see his face, the kids, daijah was very special. all of them was very special. >> the other girls who died in the fire were just 4 and 8 years old. investigators say there were no working smoke detectors in that home. d.c. police say they have temporarily shut down a nightclub during the busy u street corridor. an argument at the bar spilled out on to the streets and heard gunfire around 1:15 in the morning. the victim's been identified as 30-year-old joseph hardin. police arrested 24-year-old cedric spicer. and he's charged with first-degree murder tonight. the weekend started with clouds and drizzle.

thomas jr.he's serving a 3 1/2 year sentence in prison for stealing city funds that he steered through a nonprofit. the trust will be released next week. it shows trouble far beyond the money that was stolen, including being out of compliance with several requirements for nonprofits to get federal and local funds. a spokesperson for the trust says those problems have been addressed. much more on the story at nbcwashington.com. tonight, virginia governor bob mcdonnell celebrating the bipartisan victory to repair roads and bridges. it's their last chance to solve some of the worst traffic problems in the nation. the state senate passed the measure to put $3.5 billion into roads, transit, and rails over the next five years. virginia will get the money through a complicated plan that reduces the state's gas tax,

enough. washington cardinal leaves tomorrow to be part of the conclave to be part of the new pope. the obama administration is jumping into the legal battle over same-sex marriage at the supreme court. in a brief filed with the court, the administration says the defensive marriage act is unconstitutional because it violates equal protection. justices will hear arguments in a challenge to that law and california's proposition 8 next month. still to come tonight, why football star manti te'o has waited so long to speak about the hoax involving his supposed girlfriend. his first news conference since the story broke. and sunday could deliver

a media blitz today to hear from manti te'o. he says he's over the embarrassment about the online girlfriend hoax and is ready to focus on football. today he spoke at the nfl combine. in january he said that a girl that he thought died had never actually existed. >> people wondered why i took a while to come out. from our point of view, let everything come out first and then have my side come out. and so in the way that we did it, i felt it worked best for me. >> te'o claims he was a victim of the hoax. he says nfl teams want to talk football. thanks in part to a new

forecast in virginia, 383 with clouds around. first thing, bright sunshine. temperatures near 50 degrees for a high in ashburn and temperatures in the mid-30s by your sunday evening. the clouds are going to linger through the overnight hours and we may start out partly to mostly cloudy but eventually the drier air will be in place and that's the reason i'm confident that the sunshine comes back tomorrow afternoon. nice and clear tomorrow going into early monday and monday looks like another fine day to be outside. a quiet start to the school and work week. the word for tomorrow, be it's going to be breezy tomorrow for sure. partly to mostly cloudy in the morning with temperatures in the 30s. but as the skies clear out, the winds will increase tomorrow. 15 to 25 miles per hour for winds with plenty of sunshine,

points. 11th ranked georgetown, 38 game home winning streak. and at the comcast center, the dancing sturgeons feeling good about this one. they come up with the steal and 12 points in the game. the coach is not dancing just yet. later in the half, maryland on top by ten. and fouse is going to drain the three. big game for the sophomore. he had 18 points, a season high. maryland goes on to win it 72-59. and picking up late, under 30 seconds left, drive down 2. gets the bucket and tied at 58.

under 10 seconds to go now, be brian allen to eric coax and they are going to go crazy. 60-58. and the hawks took flight second half. st. jo's up by 7. game high, 26 points for galloway. st. jo's goes on to win 71-59. catholic university won the conference championship. 63-62. the pros, the wizards are above 500 teams since january 7th. that's a great stat to know because the rockets aren't above 500 teams. getting loose before this game

and that's a good thing for accokeek and under 30 seconds left, wiz up by two. rockets take it right to the rack, gets the layup. we're tied at 103. less than ten seconds to play, passes inside and makes a move, the bucket doesn't go but he's fouled on the way to the basket. making the first shot 0-4, misses the second but bradley the rookie, who's down the rebound, the wizards hold on to win it 105-103. the wizards are in toronto this monday. in hockey, the capitals gave a game away at home against the devils. alex hasn't made much noise lately but that changed with the 11th at trick of his career today versus new jersey.
